August 9th, 2009 by jackiep | No Comments | Filed in Music

ziggy marleyA friend just asked me about music for his new mp3 player. I mentioned iTunes but in the end pointed him to Amazon because the music there is already in mp3 format.

Amazon also has a bunch of free mp3 downloads:

Not to be too cheap about 99cent songs, but when you think about these little gizzies holding 1,000 songs, why, that’s $1,000!

Baghdad to Bombay to …. Next Door

September 14th, 2008 by jackiep | No Comments | Filed in Books, Music, Pleasure

That is the path of a most remarkable woman, Pearl Sofaer, who has come to be my neighbor.   I got to meet her because I am around during the day, working from home.   I was immediately struck by her positive attitude.   You may be too when you read her memoir, Baghdad to Bombay - In the Kitchens of My Cousins.  It chronicles her Jewish family’s flight from persecution in Iraq to growing up a British subject in India to ultimately alighting in the US.  It also tells the stories of her cousins spread around the world and shares family recipes.  Parts of the book remind me of one of my favorite college reading assignments: Running in the Family by Michael Ondaatje of The English Patient fame.
